Strangely enough, it’s that rigid adherence to the demands of flight that led to the diversity of birds — with flight, birds could (and did) end up everywhere, continents and isolated islands alike. And after they were there, they changed to better fit the niche in which they found themselves. Beaks show perhaps the greatest diversity, with each species adapting over time to develop a beak that made eating what was available easier. Some birds adapted to their new homes so much that they gave up flying entirely, such as the ostrich, emu, and cassowary, while the penguins adapted the movements of flight to swim through water. Fascinating bunch, the birds!
